Olin V. Mapes has done extensive research on the Westmoreland family. James Westmoreland,
whose original surname was Neville, was the first Westmoreland to arrive in this country in
1652 from Westmoreland County, England. It appears that all the Westmorelands in the USA
are related back to James.
A clan of Westmorelands arrived early in Louisiana. George Washington Westmoreland was
born in St. Helena Parish, July 4, 1832. He was the son of John/Jack Westmoreland and Nancy
Johnson. Jack was the son of Noah Lenoir and Elizabeth Tate, moving from SC to LA.
A daughter of GW Westmoreland, Mary Elizabeth, married Calvin Green Carver. The
Westmorelands and the Carvers later moved to Vernon Parish. However, some of the family
remained in this area of the state, which included Willie E. (1857-1932).
There are many Westmorelands in Tangipahoa and surrounding parishes as well as in Vernon
Parish. All are descendants of GWW who had two wives, Adaline Julia Brown and Minerva C.
Brabham.
