He was surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Peter Joseph Van Geffen and the late Marie Joseph Houssiere VanGeffen; beloved husband of the late Joan Waldine Ryan VanGeffen; father of the late George Harold VanGeffen, Jr., Shelley VanGeffen Poole, Dr. Kim E. VanGeffen, Michael S. VanGeffen; father-in-law of Clyde T. Poole, Kelly T. VanGeffen and Kim M. VanGeffen; grandfather of Shannon VanGeffen, Melissa Squibb, Chris Squibb, Jeffrey Poole, Nicholas Poole, Courtney M. Elliott, Bruce Elliott, Corey Melancon and Airman First Class Coty Melancon and great- grandfather of Kaylee Squibb. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Loyola University and a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola Law School. He was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association and practiced law in New Orleans, Metairie and Slidell for many years. He was a member of the St. Dominic Knights of Columbus, The Knights of Alhambra, the New Orleans Athletic Club, the New Orleans Power Squadron, the New Orleans Big Game Fishing Club, Metairie Country Club and The Krewe of Carrollton. He was King of the Krewe of Carrollton in 1972. He served as the President of the Eden Isles Homeowners Association. He also served in the Louisiana National Guard. Those who knew George will remember his fondness of telling jokes. He will also be missed for his great optimism, his sharp mind, his love of family and for the incredible generosity and kindness he displayed to anyone he met. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's name to the Cancer Crusaders, Inc. in order to fund cancer research. ===================
