Greenfield, wife of Charles W. Fasterling, passed away peacefully at home in Mandeville Jan. 9, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alan Greenfield and Olive Woodyard, and a brother, John Bruce Greenfield. She was born in New Orleans Aug. 24, 1932. She lived the major portion of her life in the New Orleans/Metairie area. She was a graduate of Eleanore McMain High School and then Sophie Newcomb College where she was a president of the dance club and performed solos in "The Nutcracker Suite" as the Sugarplum Fairy. She earned her bachelor of fine arts degree from Newcomb in 1954. She taught first grade at Mt. Olivet School in Algiers and designed a couple of carnival balls. After her marriage in 1956 she joined her husband in Japan who was serving there in the U. S. Navy. While there, she was instrumental in raising funds for an orphanage in Yokohama. She later substitute taught at Metairie Park Country Day School. She subsequently earned her master's degree in social work from Tulane University in 1989 and worked in that area until her retirement. During her life she and her husband traveled extensively and were able to visit Scotland, her ancestral heritage, as well as many other countries. She served on the local boards of the Volunteers of America, Strive Center, and Heart Ambassadors. She was a past president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Volunteers of America in New Orleans and twice served as chairperson for their annual Bal de Printempts. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles W. Fasterling; two sons, Bruce K. Fasterling and his wife, Linda, of St. Louis, Mo., Brian K. Fasterling and his fiancee, Kelly Watkins, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and daughter, Sarah A. Fasterling (Mrs. Matthew K. Dowdy) of Plano, Texas; one sister, five grandchildren and a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews. A private celebration of life service will be held.
