JOYCE M. GOODSON Osborn Funeral Home Shreveport, LA Joyce M. Goodson passed away in Dallas May 24. She had moved from Shreveport Louisiana in 2007 to be near her family. Visitation will be held at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Avenue in Shreveport on Monday, June 1 between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. A graveside funeral service is planned for Tuesday, June 2 at 11:00 AM at Forest Park Cemetery located at 3700 Saint Vincent Avenue in Shreveport. Joyce was born in Bernice, Louisiana in 1924. She was a graduate of Ouachita Parish High School and attended Louisiana Tech University. She moved to Shreveport from Monroe to work for the Veterans Administration. Joyce was a long time member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church and the Shreveport Geological Society Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband John P. Goodson, Sr., mother Claudia Caldwell Miller, father Thomas Miller Sr. and brother Thomas Miller Jr. and his wife Geneva. She is survived by sons John P. Goodson Jr. and his wife Gail of Dallas TX, Charles T. Goodson and his wife Jeanne of Lafayette LA; granddaughters Fallon P. Goodson, Caroline A. Goodson, Katherine Hodgins and husband Norman F. III, Elizabeth Dupuy and husband Jordan, Carrie deVries and husband Maurice, and Kindall G. McElwee; great grandsons Maurice "Reese" deVries IV, John Marshall deVries, Alexander T. Dupuy and Madison Dupuy. Pallbearers are Maurice deVries, Ben Lay, Dr. Mitchell Wilder, Arthur Trowbridge, Jordan Dupuy, Norman Hodgins III, Albert M. Barro, Gregory J. Barro and Gerry Huddleston. Weslaco, TX Calvin J. Sawyer, 83, passed away to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at his residence in Donna, TX. He was born January 15, 1926 in Farmerville, LA to J.A. & Josie Wheeler Sawyer. He was an independent distributor for Borden's Milk for 56 years and a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Cherie & 1 son, Tony Sawyer. He is survived by 1 son, Tom Sawyer (Janie) of Donna, TX & daughter-in-law, Pat Sawyer of Rocky Branch, LA; 3 grandchildren, Charles Sawyer (Nancy) of Bastrup, LA, Shelley Barnes of Monroe, LA & Andrea Beckler (David) of Bernice, LA; also surviving are 5 great-grandchildren, Megan Barnes, Kirstin Barnes, Skylar Barnes, Ramsey Sawyer & Brodey Sawyer. CHESTER A. NENNEY Miller Funeral Services and Cremation Society of Texas Houston, TX Chester A. Nenney died peacefully at home on May 30, with his wife and daughter nearby. To the end he shared humor and showed concern for others. He was born in Monroe, LA, Oct. 22, 1917, to Chester Arthur Nenney and Emma Owen Nenney. He was preceded in death by his sister Polly Nenney Breed. He is survived by Willine, his lifelong sweetheart and wife of 65 years; daughter Susan and son-in-law Louis B. Parks; nephews Larkin Breed, Owen Breed and wife Lynn and Mike Breed and wife Ellen. We love him. He attended L.S.U. before returning to work in Monroe. He held the first draft number (#158) drawn in 1940 and joined the National Guard, transferring to the Army Air Corps in 1941. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in June, 1942. In the 301st Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force, he arrived in England in 1942 and made his first flight in a B-17. Flying from England and North Africa, he completed 51 missions as copilot and pilot in "Behind the Eight Ball", and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a flight instructor in Sebring FL for the duration of his service ending in 1945. He married his sweetheart Willine Boxley, Mar. 25, 1944. With a BA in mechanical engineering from Louisiana Tech, he began a successful and lifelong career as a petroleum engineer. Chester made many friendships that lasted his lifetime. Growing up in Monroe, he and Willine kept their close knit hometown pals. These friends survived the Great Depression and did their share in World War II, both profoundly influencing their outlook on life. With modest expectations, they found success and enjoyment all their lives. They laughed a lot. Chester was a quiet, dignified man with a big spirit, clear principles and a twinkle in his eye. He loved a good joke, a vodka martini and chocolate malts. He drew great pleasure from the company of family and friends. He was a lifelong Presbyterian and fulfilled a variety of church roles in congregations in Houston, Lafayette and Liberal, KS. When he was away from his family and friends, he always sent the same message: "Tell 'em all hello." His last years were greatly enriched by the loving care of Gretel Vassel, LaShonda Edwards and most especially Ernestine Dickerson. A memorial service will be held at Bayou Manor, 4141 S. Braeswood, Friday June 5, 11:00 AM followed by a reception. FANNIE KELLY THOMPSON Mulhearn Funeral Home Rayville, LA Fannie Kelly Thompson passed away on June 1, 2009 in her sleep. She was ninety-nine years old. Ms. Fannie was born January 9, 1910 in Liddieville, LA and spent most of her adult life in Richland Parish where she was widely loved and respected for a lifetime of teaching and community service. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P. M., Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Rayville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Rayville Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home in Rayville. After growing up in Liddieville, Ms. Fannie left home to pursue her education. She graduated from the Louisiana Normal School (Northwest Louisiana State College) and received her masters degree in Education from Northeast Louisiana University. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 40 years before retiring in 1972. In 1934, while teaching in Delhi, Ms. Fannie married Mr. James B. Thompson, Jr. and was happily married for 64 years until his death in 1998. During her life, Ms. Fannie was an active member of many clubs and organizations including the Rhymes Memorial Library Fundraising Committee, Rayville United Methodist Church, Lambda Kappa Club, Rayville Literary Club, The Rayville Art and Civic Club, The Black Cats bridge club and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association. Ms. Fannie loved to read, paint, write poetry, play golf and play bridge. She also loved hunting for seashells and watching birds. Ms. Fannie is survived by two sons, James B. Thompson, III of Baton Rouge and William Ralph Thompson of Amherst, MA; daughters-n-law: Nancy Glisson Thompson and Nancy Blake Thompson; four grandchildren: Dennis Thompson, Kelli Thompson Stevens, Amy Thompson and Nanette Thompson; great-grandchildren: AJ Hoose, Sarah Bailey Stevens and Celia Claire Stevens; and a niece: Nancy Holly Walters. Throughout his life music was a great passion, rather playing in the band with his friends for years or in his churches he served later in life as a Methodist Minister. During his later years he served and helped many in churches in Louisiana and Arkansas. He is survived by his wife, Rose Stinnett Peel of Huttig, AR, two daughters, Sherri Peel Taylor and husband Jerry of Jonesboro, LA, Susan Peel Cook of Quitman, LA, and one son, Lewis A. Les had friendships that lasted his lifetime and will be remembered for his sense of humor and enjoyment of life. Mrs. Grantham was a retired social worker, a longtime member at First Baptist Church in Rayville, and a member of the Beouf River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. During that time he was active and served on the Board of Wholesale Lawn & Garden Distributors Association, being elected President in 1964. He founded and operated Johnnie Bayles Garden Mart until it was sold and operated as Sonny Panzico's Garden Mart. After retirement, he grew tomatoes and Angle Trumpet flowers at his home as well as "JB Secret Formula." Many people loved to visit his home for the conversation as well as the products. Mr. Bayles was a member of First Baptist Church of West Monroe for 53 years and a deacon for many of those years. He was the Director of the Tennison Sunday School Class for over 30 years. Also, he was a member and past President of the West Monroe Rotary Club, receiving the coveted A.O. Evans award. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, J. He was a licensed realtor, a Certified Licensed Underwriter owning his own TPA firm. He currently owns The Pretzel Twister in Mall of Louisiana. He was a lover of music and played and sung in various bands and choirs throughout his life. He loved acting in and out of the theatre! He was a pilot and loved flying. Most importantly he was a mentor, friend, son, brother, father and husband who influenced many lives. Life will definitely be a little less exciting without him. He was born January 19, 1936 in Richton, Mississippi to Burl L. Eastepp, Sr. and Verna (Dominy) Eastepp. On December 16, 1956 he married Ann Adcock in Bastrop, Louisiana. Burl proudly served in the United States Army where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 32 years of service. Burl worked for Southwest Airlines in Phoenix for 10 years and for a Management Health Agency for 20 years. Patricia Theresa Watson Scoggins was born July 23, 1921 in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada and died June 16, 2009 at Cornerstone Hospital in West Monroe, LA Pat graduated with honors from Saint Mary's Academy in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. She moved to Washington D.C. and began working for the British Ministry of Supply. Pat was an avid ice skater; it was on the ice rink that she would meet her future husband. She assisted a Navy serviceman, Aubrey Scoggins with his ice skating skills; a courtship followed, and they married during the war in Washington D.C. They lived in Bastrop, LA where their three children were born. She was hired by the City of Bastrop for a temporary position to help out during a tax season. Through her dedication and hard work ethic her temporary position would continue for nearly twenty seven years of service, retiring as the Assistant City Clerk for the City of Bastrop. She was secretary of the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service. Mother loved all her children's friends, whether her children were home or not, her front yard was the perfect baseball diamond of which was used regular; she always had fresh baked "goodies" for all to enjoy after the baseball games. She also made beautiful decorated cakes for all occasions. She took the required training to become an American citizen, passed the test and became an American citizen in Shreveport, LA on February 7, 1968, of which she was always proud of her citizenship. She lived independently in her home in Bastrop, until the flood of 1991. At that time she relocated to West Monroe, to be close to her daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Jerry Culp. When her health would no longer allow her to live alone she moved to Landmark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Monroe. Her adopted parents, David and Mary Watson and sister, Florence Fernie of Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada and Louis Aubrey Scoggins, the father of her children preceded her in death. Pat is survived by her daughter, Theresa Scoggins Culp and husband Jerry of West Monroe, LA, her son-in-law was a wonderful caretaker; he took care of her like a son. She is survived by two sons, David Lewis Scoggins and wife Frances of Arlington, Texas and Donald Wayne Scoggins and wife Sue of Cartersville, GA; grandchildren, Sarah L. Scoggins and Matthew D. Scoggins of Arlington, TX and Christopher N. Scoggins and Jonathan W. Scoggins of Cartersville, GA; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be family, David L.
