A Grant Parish School ca 1900
The older woman on the left is my great-great grandmother, Martha Amanda Newman Walker (b9/27/1845, d 11/24/1919). The younger woman on the top holding the small child is her daughter Janie Elizabeth (Bettie) Walker Hataway (b. 3/23/1878, d 2/6/1964). The child she is holding may be my grandmother, Ava Hataway (McBride). The little girl, second from the right on the first row is Josie Slater (Till), (b. 1896) (We've mostly based the date of the picture on her). Everybody who looks at the picture immediately focuses on her, "That's Josie Till", apparently her looks didn't change much at all. Beyond that, we aren't sure. My mother can look at this and say those are Arringtons, and those are Hataways, etc, but which Arrington or Hataway nobody's really sure. We know it is Grant Parish because of the people we have identified. Two of the girls are holding up slates, but when I enlarged the picture on my scanner, the slates just have "Happy School" written on them. I'd love to be able to get the picture out to see if we can identify more of the kids. We know there are Walkers, Slaters, Hataways and Arringtons. Does anyone recognize any of the other people? Let us know!
