Captain W.P. Powers

Submitted by: DeWanna Lindo

The first school in the community of Crowville was held in the Hurricane Bayou Church, which was built in 1870.
There were twenty-five students taught by Captain W.P. Powers. Captain W.P. Powers was born in Canada and came south during the Civil War to fight for the Confederacy.
After the war Captain Powers remained in Louisiana and in Franklin Parish. He taught school, became the proprietor of The Franklin Sun news-paper, and for a short time was the postmaster in Winnsboro.
