| Hurricane Rita Saturday, September 24, 2005 | |||
| Heavy damage and flooding were reported in Cameron
Parish, Louisiana, where the hurricane's eye came ashore with a 15-20
foot storm surge around 2:30 a.m. CDT. Many communities were entirely
destroyed, reducing rows of homes along the Cameron Parish shoreline
to nothing but splintered remains and empty foundations. Because the
hurricane-hit area had been evacuated ahead of the storm, no lives were
lost. During the evacuation, citizens of Cameron Parish took shelter all over the United States. The Cameron Parish Pilot has given them a way to find out where their friends are and also a way for people around the country to find out about Cameron Parish evacuees. We are looking for any historical documents, articles, photos, etc. Everyone is urged to donate transcriptions of Cameron Parish bible records, cemeteries, court records, old newspaper articles, biographies of residents, old letters, census data, obituaries, family histories, parish histories, military records, old photographs, etc. The USGenWeb has provided an easy to use form for submitting a RECORD of any type to the Louisiana GenWeb Archives.
