Hurricane Audrey, the first hurricane of 1957, claimed more lives than any other natural disaster in nearly 20 years, until Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The hurricane struck the extreme west coast of Louisiana and part of eastern Texas on June 27. It killed 534 persons and left about 40,000 homeless. Cameron, Creole, and Grand Chenier were the most heavily damaged communities. Cameron was also flooded by a tidal wave. |
