The Obituary Project Committee of the Pointe de l'Eglise Genealogical and Historical Society, P.O. Box 160, Church Point, LA 70525 has been researching, copying, cutting, organizing, pasting, and indexing reports of Acadia Parish deaths.  Work continues, as they strive to work through the newspapers and microfilm from the late 1800s to the present day.  While their work is not available for sale in book form, a very few copies have been produced and are available for reference and use on-site at the three larger branches of the Acadia Parish Library system --Crowley, Rayne and Church Point.  Published volumes include:

  • Church Point News    1941-1943; 1947-1954; 1959-1963; 1971; 1991-1995; 1997-1998
  • Crowley Daily Signal    1870-1900 (includes a few reports from newspapers outside of Acadia); 1901-1910; 1920-1953 (Missing Jul-Dec 1930, Jan-Jun 1933, Jan 1-11 1934, Jan-Jun 1937, Jan-Jun 1940); 1960-1966; 1970-1974
  • Crowley Post Herald   1970-1974
  • Crowley Post Signal   1980, 1984-1999
  • Rayne Acadian-Tribune   1971-1998
  • Rayne Independent   1970

To help our virtual users, we will be building upon the indices and link them here, primarily by year.  At a minimum, each index will include the name of the deceased and the date of the newspaper report.   Remember, some deaths may not have been the subject of a newspaper report, especially in the early years.  Also, while the volunteers have attempted to give you complete and accurate pointers to the available newspaper reports, it would be wise to assume that not all deaths were captured here.  As always, it is the responsibility of the researcher to verify the content of the source material.  Should you find the Pointe de l'Eglise G&H Society's work helpful or deficient, please let us hear from you and share your thoughts and support.
