Young Farmer Is Killed As Tractor Runs Away
A Fayette County farmer was fatally injured Thursday night when his
tractor crushed him as he waled to open a gate on Higbee Mill Road. The
body of Fred Scott Burke, 25, of the Higbee Mill Road, was not found until
7 a.m. yesterday. Corner Chester Hager said his wife, Mrs. Ova Anna Burke,
found her husband about 7 a.m.
Hager said the rear tractor wheel stopped midway on Burke's back.
Burke died instantly of multiple internal fractures and injuries, the
officials said. Officials theorized that Burke climbed down from the 5,000
pound machine to open a gate and pick up additional implements. The vehicle
apparently lurched forward and struck a fence post which stopped the wheel
on Burke.
Mrs. Burke said her husband, an employee of the J. W. Robinson farm
ate supper at home about 6 p.m. Thursday and then returned to the fields
to finish plowing. She she she went to bed shortly after her husband left
the house and did not miss him until she awakened yesterday morning.
Hager said he had apparently finished plowing the field and was in
the process of picking up another implement in an adjoining field. The
accident occurred within 500 feet of their home.
Burke, a member of the Springdale baptist Church, is survived by
two daughters, Priscilla Kay and Teresa Ann Burke.
Other survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam O. Burke,
Brannon Road in Jessamine County; two brothers, Sam Burke, Washington,
D. C., and Russell Burke, Jessamine County; a sister, Miss Barbara C.
Burke, Jessamine County, and his grandfather, W. S. Burke, of
Nicholasville.
The boy was taken to the Guyn, Kurtz and Hager Funeral Home in
Nicholasville, where services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday by
the Rev. William B. Craig. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery,
Nicholasville.
