  • Hopkins County was formed from Henderson County in 1807.
  • Henderson County was formed from Christian County in 1798.
  • Christian County was formed from Logan County in 1792.
  • Logan County was formed from Lincoln County in 1792.
  • Lincoln County was formed from Kentucky County, Virginia in 1780.
  • At the time Lincoln County was formed it was one of the original three counties covering the entire state of Kentucky, now divided into 120 counties.

    • Hopkins county is located in the Western Coal Field region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 345 to 729 feet above sea level. In 1990 the county population was 46,126 in a land area of 550 square miles, an average of 83.9 people per square mile. The county seat is Madisonville, founded in 1807 and named for James Madison. The first post office opened in 1809 as Hopkins Court House.
