Holloman Letter, 1941

The following letter was written by Neva Jones Holloman to her daughter, Lilla Yost Holloman (Shelton). Neva Jones was a daughter of Nicholas Roland Jones (1850-1917) who was a son of Solomon Walker Jones (1820-1891) and Mary Burton Gooch (1819-1890). Solomon Walker Jones brought his family to Hopkins County, KY from Granville County, NC about 1841. This letter was found in the Bible belonging to Nicholas Roland Jones when it was passed on to his grandson. The grandson, Sam Paul Jones, sent a copy of the letter to the Granville County Library where I found it.

Letter (dated July 27, 1941)

This Bible, old and worn as it is, is the Bible read around the fireside each evening where we knelt in prayer, by my father Roland Jones. It was worn so much after its continued use that it was sent to the Jones Buggy Co. Factory where it was recovered by the trimmer there; I have kept it because its reading meant so much to me. My father's life was an inspiration to my soul, and his Christian life has guided me all along down the pathway of my life. His influence will live on like all other good Christian men who have lived and trusted in God to keep them in the right way. He was called away to his Heavenly home Aug. 26th, 1917 at the age of 66 years. He was the son of Solomon Walker and Mary Burton Jones who came from North Carolina, Granville County. Solomon Walker Jones was a Methodist Minister and preached many years in this vicinity, around Hanson where he reared his family on the farm, now the Livingston farm. At one time he owned all the big farms adjoining this home. He held many successful meetings. Some of them at Providence Church near Hanson. When his family were all grown he purchased a home in Madisonville where he and my dear Grandmother lived until they passed away. They are buried in the Gooch Cemetery near Hanson. My Father and Mother are buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery at Madisonville, Ky. My father Roland Jones and mother Laura Jones built a little home in Madisonville soon after their marriage and lived there and reared their family consisting of Joseph Walker Jones (died in infancy), Neva Holloman, Lilla Bourland (Hurrlee), Sam Jones, Laura Jones.

This little bit of family history is written so that you may know where your ancestors came from (North Carolina). It might come in handy some day for you or your children.

The memory of my Grandparents and my beloved parents is very dear to me. My mother was Laura Ashby. Her father was Stephen Ashby. Her mother died when she was only 2 yrs of age. She was reared near Slaughters Ky. I never had the privilege of knowing my Grandparents on my mother's side.

Lovingly, your mother, Neva J. Holloman
