Miami County is located in the eastern tier of counties, next to Missouri, and in the second tier south from the Kansas River. It is bounded on the north by Johnson County, on the east by Missouri, south by Linn County, and west by Franklin County.₁

Organized in 1855 under the name of Lykins. County seat, Paola. In honor of Dr. David Lykins. who was a missionary among the Miamis. He was also a member of the first Territorial Council. Name changed in 1861 to Miami, after the tribe of Indians.₂
