KEARNEY County has an area of 864 square miles; it is twenty-four miles from east to west; thirty-six miles from north to south.1
County was renamed to KEARNY in 1889.

Organized Narch 27, 1888. County seat Lakin. Named after General Kearny, who commanded United States troops in the West during the Indian troubles2
