At this date (1882) there are still twenty-three unorganized counties in Kansas; these are as follows: Cheyenne, Sherman, Thomas, Wallace, St. John, Gove, Greeley, Wichita, Scott, Lane, Hamilton, Kearney, Sequoyah, Gray, Stanton, Grant, Arapahoe, Kansas, Stevens, Seward, Meade, Clark and Comanche counties.1

Organized September 2, 1886. County seat Gove. In honor of Captain Grenville L. Gove, Eleventh Kansas Cavalry, who died in 1864.2
