Will of Jacob Sidney Underwood,  recorded: Book S, page 368, Mecklenburg
County, North Carolina:

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF J. S. UNDERWOOD, DECEASED

I, J. S. Underwood, of the County and State aforesaid, bring of sound
mind and memory, but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existance
do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form
following that is to say:
(1) That my executor hereinafter mentioned shall provide for my body a
decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends and pay
all funeral expenses together with my just debts howsoever and to
whomsoever owing out of the moneys that may first come into his hands as
a part or parcel of my estate.
(2) I give and devise to my beloved wife, Hettie, all my household and
kitchen furniture to use and do with as she wishes and if any of said
furniture remains after her death the same I will to my son Ralph
Underwood.
(3) I give and devise to my son, Ralph Underwood my land and premises on
which I now live, together with all my personal prop'ty of whatever it
may consist at my death, except my household and kitchen furniture which
I have already disposed of, provided he, my son Ralph, will take care
and provide the necessary food, raiment and attention that my wife,
Hettie, and myself will need during our natural lives. Also, I will and
devise that my son, Ralph Underwood will look after and care for my son,
Matthew, and that he [Matthew] have a maintenance from my estate during
his natural life.
(4) and lastly, I do herby constitute and appoint my son Ralph Underwood
lawful executor to all intents and purposes to execute this my last will
and testament according to the true intent and meaning of the same and
every part and clause thereof, hereby revoking and declaring utterly
void all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made.

In witness whereof, I, the said J. S. Underwood do hereunto set my hand
and seal, this 8th day of May, 1914.

Signed, sealed and published and declared by the said J. S. Underwood to
be his last will and testament in the presence of us, who at his request
and in his presence do subscribe our names as witnesses thereto.
