Mecklenburg County, NC - Mexican War Survivors

Charlotte Observer

Survivors of Mexican War - But Three Mecklenburg Veterans Survive This
Conflict of More than a Half Century Ago - The Unfortunate Story of Mr.
Jesse Saunders.

An Observer reporter was talking with the genial 'Squire D.G. Maxwell
yesterday just as an old man passed by. In response to the newspaper
man's inquiry, the 'Squire answered.

That is Mr. Daniel M. Rose, whose home is on North Caldwell Street. He
is one of the three surviving veterans of the war with Mexico that are
now residing in Mecklenburg County. Mr. Rose was a member of Company F
of the Fifth Tennessee Regiment, and saw the active service in the war
in which the United States did not lose a single fight.

Continuing the 'Squire stated that there were but two other living
veterans. Mr. Daniel M. Robinson, who resides on South Mint Street, in
this city, and who was a member of the well-known Capt. Green W.
Caldwell's company that went to the war from Mecklenburg county. This
was Company A, of the Third United States Dragoons.

Mr. Jesse Saunders, who now lives near Newell's, is the last of these
aged citizens. There was no braver man nor more patriotic citizen than
Mr. Sanders. His story is a very unfortunate one. While in camp near
Matamoras, he was taken with the most violent form of smallpox. It was
necessary that he be removed and hence an ambulance was secured. As the
wagon was moving off, the mules became frightened and ran away,
throwing Mr. Sanders to the ground and severely injuring his back. He
recovered from the smallpox with the loss of an eye. However, during
the last half century, he has been suffering with his back and has
never recovered. Mr. Sanders draws a very comfortable pension from the
government.

While there are but three surviving veterans, still there are several
widows of those who participated in this struggle of the long ago.
