National Archives W 3962 Based on his Revolutionary War Service, in which he served when he was in his mid to late 50s, John Dickey's second wife Elizabeth Leasey applied for a pension which, through trial and tribulation and, with the proverbial bureaucratic red tape, she never received. It was not until 1852 that the pension was granted to their daughter Margaret (Dickey) Anderson when she was almost 60 years old. The pension application provides a record of his fascinating military service through statements made by his wife, Elizabeth (12 September 1844); by John Cochran (26 September 1844); by David Hair (30 September 1844); by daughter, Margaret (Dickey) Anderson (19 November 1846 and 9 April 1852); and by Alfred D. Kerr (1852). He fought in the Battle of Ramsour's Mill, Battle of Camden, Battle of Kings Mountain, and the Skirmish at Cowan's Ford. The documents contained in the file, presented in chronological order, are transcriptions made from the original documents in John Dickey's Revolutionary War pension file, located in the U. S. National Archives, Washington, D.C. (The file is available on microfilm but the original file, W3962, is not generally available). (Northern Ireland/Pennsylvania) John Dickey (1724-1808) (Northern Ireland/Pennsylvania/South Carolina/North Carolina) (I) Rachel Tanner (2) Elizabeth Leasey Born in Northern Ireland in c1724, John immigrated with his parents from Ireland to Pennsylvania. The first mention in Pennsylvania of John Dickey was in 1751, when he was named in the will of Philip Tanner as the husband of his daughter Rachel. He is also mentioned in the Will of his father George Dickey (c1690-1748) who died in Sadsbury Twp, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Upon the death of John's father, the widow Margaret and her four sons moved to the western Carolinas: the widow to the south side of the Catawba on a branch of Fishing Creek in present day SC; Moses (after 1724-1753) to south side of the Catawba on the north fork of Turkey Creek in present day York SC; James (1712/3-1792) to the north side of Broad River on the west side of Mountain Creek on Polk Branch in Rutherford County NC; William (b.c1715) to the south side of the Catawba River on Allison's Creek in present day SC; and John whose first move was to Anson County on the south side of Fair Forrest on Sugar Creek, also in present day SC. Around 1755, he moved to Rowan County North Carolina. John Dickey married twice: Rachel Tanner (1724-1789) and Elizabeth Leasey (1765-1845). Children of John Dickey and Rachel Tanner were: Elizabeth Dickey (1750-1803) who married William Johnston (1748-1797); Mary Polly Dickey (1749-1803) who married William Davidson (1755-1803); and Samuel Dickey (1765-1840) who married Rebecca Patterson (1764-1866). Children of John Dickey and Elizabeth Leasey were: Margaret Dickey (1795- 1855) who married William Farmer Anderson (1790-1840) and John L. Dickey (1799- 1845).
