Wed., Dec. 26, 1832, Patriot (Greensboro, N.C.)
DIED, in Statesville, N. C., Nov. 17th, 1832, after an illness of five
weeks, borne with the utmost resignation, in the 28th year of his age, the
REV. ROBERT LINDSAY CALDWELL, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Fourth
Creek.
THE REV. ROBERT L. CALDWELL was the second son of the REV. SAMUEL C.
CALDWELL, late pastor of the Presbyterian congregation of Sugar Creek in
Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, N. C. and grandson of the REV. DAVID CALDWELL
of Guilford County, so well-known throughout the churches of North Carolina,
who died a few years ago at the advanced age of 100.
Our departed brother received his collegiate education at Athens, Georgia,
and pursued his theological studies at the Union Seminary, Prince Edward
County, Va. during the life of the lamented DR. RICE. In the autumn of 1828 he
was licensed by the presbytery of Concord, to preach the everlasting Gospel,
and after itinerating to some extent in this state, he was invited by the
congregation of Fourth Creek to labor among them. In September 1831, he was
ordained and installed a pastor of that congregation; and in short space of a
year, in the midst of his growing usefulness, he was called by the Great Head
of the Church, to the more exalted and holy employments of the heavenly world.
The disease which terminated his existence here was a fever, which deprived
him of the full exercise of his mental faculties during a great part of the
time.
