New Bern Weekly Journal, July 8th, 1886
Mr. and Mrs. Louis <Lewis> H. Mallard have the sympathies of our entire
community in the death of their little boy, William Hardy, with cholera
infantum, which sad event occurred on Thursday last.

Additional Comments:
Lewis Henry Mallard and Susan Elizabeth (Andrews) Mallard had a child that
died before he was 2 years old. His name was William Hardy Mallard, named
after Lewis Henry's father. He was known to the family as "Little Willie".
He was born 27 October 1884 and died 1 July 1886. His grave marker is still
visible and located in the Andrews Family Cemetery on King Field Rd.

Cholera Infantum was a fatal form of gastroenteritis occurring in children
during the summer months due to hot weather, bad air, or poor milk. Family
tradition states that the young child died of the Colic as a result of being
fed fresh string beans. It is possible that the beans might not have been
prepared properly and therefore too harsh on his young digestive system.
