State of North Carolina } This day came
  Jones County          } before me Emanuel
Jarmon One of the Justice of Peace for
Sd County, William Stanly who being duly
sworn deposeth & saith that he was well
acquainted with James Stanley a soldier
in the Revolutionary War in the Continental
line of this State and further this deponant saith
that said James Stanly Enlisted under the
command of Frederick Hargit in Craven County
and was carried to Halifax in Sd State and
Put under the Command of Capt Walshe &
was thus carried to the North and was slain or
died at the Battle Brandywine which this
deponant thinks was in January 1778 and
he never returned out of service to this deponan
t Knowledge and this deponant heard from
several that was in the same company
with Sd James Stanley that he was certainly
dead & believes he served his time as a soldier
faithfully and further this deponant saith
sd James Stanley Enlisted for the term of Three
Years, & Hugh Stanley of Sd County is the
Eldest Brother & heir at Law of Sd James
Stanly decd further this deponant saith
not Sworn to & subscribed before me this
4th of July 1821            his

should be given to the oath of William Stanly,

This is to certify that Emanuel Jarman and Richard M. McDa [page torn]
Esquires whose signatures appear above are acting Justices of the Peace
for said County of Jones and due Credit is to be given their signature
as such. Given under my hand and Seal of Office at Trenton
