March 25, 1915 paper (Waterford Times?)

Three times the grim shadow of death has entered the Van Valin homes within
six months. First, in the death of Clarence Van Valin in October, again on
Christmas day when Frances Van Aernam, their sister was called. The last on
the 17th of March when Oliver, the youngest of twelve children born to
Oliver and Jane Van Valin, was taken. Ollie, as he was familiarly called,
was born in the old homestead July 8, 1862, attended district school here,
and later, as the other brothers and sisters left to make homes for
themselves, he stayed with the aging parents. Being of a naturally jovial
disposition, their last days were made exceptionally pleasant by his care
of them. In September of 1895 he was united in marriage to Miss Amelia
Marquette of Mukwonago, and until the death of his parents they still
remained on the old farm. In January of 1904 they moved to the farm which
they had purchased from his sister, Mrs. Mary Humbert. Eight children,
seven girls and one son, have come to add to their cares and joys. A happy
home, where the parents were of one accord and the children were blessed
with health and happiness. Why should it be so rudely broken up is beyond
human minds to understand. Mr. Van Valin has been confined to the house but
a few days, with no serious symptoms until the day previous to his death,
when a nurse was summoned at once, but even then no one realized his
condition, and without any warning, at 4 am of the 17th of March, 1915, he
passed quietly away. Funeral services were held on Sat. at the home, burial
in the Caldwell cemetery. Messrs. O & H Greeley, R & H Clark, W.L. Brown
and Bert Craig acted as pallbearers. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith sang three
beautiful selections and Rev. Manation, pastor of the M.E. Church, of which
Mr. Van Valin was a member, officiated. The brothers, F.D. of Milwaukee,
Clement of this place and Alfred of Nebraska and sisters, Mrs. Margaret
Humbert of this place and Mrs. Mary Humbert of Montana, are left to mourn
the loss of their youngest brother and with a bereaved widow and fatherless
little ones receive the sympathy of the entire community.
