Surname: SEARS

The Racine Journal 2-25-1903, Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin--SEARS--
Luther R. Sears, one of the oldest residents of southern Wisconsin,
died at his home, 1146 Wisconsin Street this morning, aged 92 years.
Deceased was for many years a prosperous farmer in this county. The
funeral will be held from the family residence tomorrow afternoon at
2 o'clock. Friends will please omit flowers.

He was born in Ashfield, Mass., in 1811. In 1836 he came west and
settled in Caledonia, Racine county, where he purchased a half section
of land. At that time there were only two farm houses between Racine
and Milwaukee. His first home consisted of a few logs thrown together
without even a floor or doors. Mr. Sears comes from that rugged
enterprising and thrifty New England stock, and by his industrious
habits, working early, and late, in a number of years he amassed a
considerable fortune. In 1873 he retired from farming and has been a
resident of Racine since that time.
