From the Berlin Courant, July 16, 1905. Sent to me by the Historical
Society of Racine

Welsh Pioneer at Rest

ELLIS HUGHES WHO CAME HERE IN '42', DIES AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 72
YEARS

Ellis Hughes, one of the oldest Welsh American residents of Racine and
a man of sterling qualities, passed peacefully away early Sunday
morning at his home on Center street, aged 72 years. The cause of his
death was jaundice, from which he had been a patient sufferer for
several weeks.

Ellis Hughes was a native of North Wales. His father and mother,
William and Janet Hughes, with nine children, emigrated to the United
States and went direct to Newark, Ohio. His father arrived in Racine
Christmas Day of the same year, and the balance of the family came here
in 1842. Having lived a few months in the city, the family
subsequently settled on a farm in Mount Pleasant, where they lived
several years and ultimately took up their residence on Villa street.
It will be noticed that the family was among the very first Welsh
settlers of Racine and their decendants are numerous and influential.

Ellis Hughes followed his trade, as mason and bricklayer all his life
and has assisted in the erection of many buildings in the city. He was
a hard working man and enjoyed excellent health until he was attacked
by his last illness, which proved fatal.

Mr. Ellis was twice married, and two children by his first wife survive
a son and daughter, both living in California. The daughter arrived
here less than two days before his death. He leaves, besides his wife,
a stepdaughter and a sister, Mrs. Hugh H. Jones and a large circle of
friends to mourn his death, for he was a kind husband, an indulgent
father, and a true friend. He has been a member of the Welsh
Presbyterian Church for many years.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 1:30 pm from the house, 848 Center
street and at 2 pm from the Welsh Presbyterian Church.
