Born to Benjamin Franklin WIlliams and wife Mary Elizabeth Oglesby Williams on
March 29, 1920, Elbert never married. He joined the National Guard. His sister
Annie Marie Williams met him at Ft. Jackson before they shipped him out after
New Years 1946. He had a premonition that he wouldn't be returning. He was a
driver in a convoy in England during World War II. On the day of the accident
someone else drove and Elbert sat in the back. The truck overturned. The
driver and those in the front walked away, but those in the back died. Elbert
was taken to a hospital where he hung on for 2 weeks and then died on March 1,
1944. His body was returned to Kinston where a memorial service was held. He
is buried in the Colonel John Williams Cemetery.
