N. C. Militia To Defend Norfolk
Sept. 23, 1814, Raleigh Minerva

   MILITIA DETACHMENT  The quota of Militia from Wake County lately detached 
for the defense of Norfolk, took up the line of march on Wednesday for Gates 
Court House, the place of rendezvous. The citizens of Raleigh, with their 
usual liberality, contributed money and provisions to enable the quota to 
proceed toward their destination.
   BRIG. GEN. SLADE, LT. COLS. DUNCAN McDONALD from Chowan, ANDREW JOYNER from 
Martin, and MAURICE SMITH, from Granville; MAJORS, JOSEPH F. DICKINSON from 
Hertford; JOHN T. C. WIATT of Wake, and  JOHN C. GREENE from Warren, command 
this detachment.
   We have understood that Orange, Chatham and Person detachments are to be 
called out also.
   On Friday an express from Norfolk arrived here, requesting the march of our 
troops be hastened as much as possible. The detachment ordered from the 
Counties of Wayne, Greene, Lenoir, Jones, Craven, Pitt, Beaufort and Hyde, are 
to rendezvous at   Newbern to be organized under the command of COL. SIMON 
BRUTON of Lenoir and MAJOR THOMS H. BLOUNT of Beaufort.
