JOEL HINES - 1844

This Will was re-registered at the Lenoir County Courthouse in Kinston;
however, the Courthouse did not provide the page with the date of
re-registration.

I JOEL HINES of the county of Lenoir and State of North Carolina being of 
sound and memory but considering the uncertaninty (sic) of my Earthly 
Existince do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in _______ 
and forms followings that is to say.

First that my Executor (hereinafter named) shall provide for my body a 
decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relations and friends and pay 
all funarol (sic) expenses Together with my Just debts howsoever and to 
whomsoever owing out of the moneys that first come into hands as a partt or 
parcel of my estate.

I give and devise to my beloved wife PATIENCE HINES all the lands dwelling 
homes and houseings on which I now live to the BELL line on the North side 
of the road leading to Pleasant Plains together with the Household & 
Kitchen furnature and farming utentials of every description to Have & to 
Hold to Her & said PATIENCE HINES for & during the term of her Natural Life 
in Satisfaction for and said of her Dower.

I give & devise to my beloved wife PATIENCE HINES four Negroes namely 
Hinton, Nancy, Mary Eliza & Chester, Together with all the crops and stocks 
of Every Kind execepting that which I shall otherwise dispose of in my 
Will, 

I give & devise to my eldest son WILLIAM HINES all that tract of land 
whereon he now lives called the bell Track on Plan Tale (?) beginning at 
the JOHN BENTON Branch runs up a __________ the one to the Head then with a 
row of marked trees to a post oak than about west to LOFTINS corner then 
with WILLIAM KORNEGAYS line to WILLIS PIPKINS Thence with his line to the 
beginning. Three Negroes namely Daniel, Nancy, and Dennis with their 
increase with what he has already had to have & to hold to him & his heirs 
in Free Simple for ever.

I give and devise to my son JOEL HINES two Negroes namely Amos and Letty 
with what he has already received to have & to hold to him and his heirs in 
fee simple forever with the increase of the same.

I give and devise to my son STEPHEN HINES the lands on which he now lives 
beginning at the Head of Miry Branch runs about west to OUTLAW GRADDYs 
corner all of my land South of that line. Three negroes namely Barney, 
Chester and Mary Eliza with all their increase and what he has already 
received to have & to hold to him and his heirs in free simple forever.

I give and devise to my youngest son DANIEL HINES all the lands which are 
not otherwise disposed of in my Will including the Plan Tatioce (?) and its 
improvement on which he now lives Five negroes namely Winniford, Bias, 
Hetsy, Sherrod and Anni (?) with their increase and all my perishable 
property after his mothers death.

I give and bequeath to my Granddaughter ELIZA JANE GLISTON one feather bed 
and furniture and give ______________(page looks creased) my wife PATIENCE 
HINES a negro man named Hinton to be sold by my Executor and the money 
arising from said sale to be equally divided by him between the said ELIZA 
JANE GLISTON and her two brothers GEORGE GLISTON and HAYWOOD GLISTON.

I give Bequeath to BETHANY GRIMES the wife of STEPHEN GRIMES two negroes 
namely John and Gatsy with their increase one Gray Mare called Mink, one 
feather bed and furnature with what she has already received and at my 
death a negro named Civil to be sold by my Executor and the money arising 
therefrom to go to the said BETHANY HINES.

And lastly I do firmly appoint my son DANIEL HINES my lawfull Executor to 
all intent and purposes to Execute this my last Will and Testament 
according to true intent and meaning of the same and every part and clause 
there of hereby revoking and declaring utterly void all other Wills and 
Testements by me, Heretofor making___________(crease in paper,unreadable.)

In witness where of I the said JOEL HINES do hereunto set my Hand and Seal. 
This 18th Day of May 1844.
