NOTE: Lovit Hines collected as many originals or copies of original
documents located in private hands as he knew about and had the NC Archives
place said documents on microfilm.  Some of these original documents are
still in the possession of private individuals and some have been placed at
the NC Archives or other institutions in Collections.  




WILL OF HENRY HERRING

I HENRY HERRING of County of Lenoir - of sound mind; executor to provide
decent burial suitable to wishes of relations and friends and all expenses
paid; all other debts to be paid.

ITEM - beloved wife, BARHOBA HERRING - for her natural life the following
properties:  six negroes knows as Jacob, Washington, Miley, Farns, Jackman
and Caroline and after her death the negroes and their increase to be
divided among my seven children viz SMITHY POWELL, WILLIAM, JOSIAH, JOSHUA,
JAMES, BARBARA and GEORGE HERRING . Also wife received two head of horses
or mules, four sows and twenty shotes, four cows and calves, six head of
sheep to her and her heirs

ITEM - beloved daughter SMITHY POWELL during her life and in the event of
her leaving lawful issue then they to divide equally viz seven negroes:
Fanny, Tom, Margaret, Charity, Nina, Clarrisia and Addison; if said SMITHY
should die without issue above property to be divided among my other children

ITEM - beloved son WILLIAM HERRING the following negroes:  Calvin, Lucinda,
Delvy, Lizzy, Harriett and Gatry

ITEM - beloved son JOSIAH G. HERRING - negroes Jennetta, Nera

ITEM - beloved son JOSHUA HERRING - negroes Martin and Emmaline

ITEM - beloved son JAMES HERRING - negrores: Randall, Addison, a son of
Charlotts and Peansy

ITEM - my beloved daughter BARBARA HERRING - negroes:  Jesse, George, Hotin
(?), Elvy, Quincy, Levi, Susannah, Barney, Hilda, Ester, Mary, and Dice

ITEM - my beloved son GEORGE HERRING - negroes: Jesse, Byrd, Riddick,
Charlotte and Julia; also to GEORGE three hundred acres including the house
where I now reside beginning at the dividing line between me and JNO S.
CROOM and Falling Creek.

ITEM - the rest of the estate to be sold and proceeds to be equally divided
between all my children, SMITHY POWELL, WILLIAM, JOSIAH G., JAMES, BARBARA
and GEORGE  (Note Joshua not named which may have been because the
transcriber accidentally left him off - mmm)

Son JOSIAH G. HERRING to be sole executor
