#1604  LOFTIN vs HUGGINS  1828

NC Supreme Court Case found at the NC Archives

At Superior Court in Lenoir Co on 3rd Mon after the 4th Mon of Sept in 1828  
Joseph Loftin and his attorney George Attmon brought a bill of complaint 
against William Huggins on a plea of trespass  Huggins lived in Jones Co  
asked for damages of $500 - attorneys for Huggins were John H. Bryan and 
Wright C. Stanley  jurors were Joshua Rouse, Stanton Taylor, Noah Rouse, 
Rich. Pickle, John Parker, Richard Moor, John King, Thomas Walters, Joseph 
Tilghman, Moses Westbrook, Reuben Clark, Lemuel Baker  found in favor of the 
plf with damages of $313.50

The case was to recover the value of Negro woman Leah and child  the plf 
offered into evidence judgments issued in Lenoir Co where John and John C. 
Washington were plf and Rigdon White was the def  it appears on 11 Dec 1827 
Rigdon White was the owner of the property consisting of Leah and child  at 
court in Jones Co on the "2nd Mon of Dec 1827 upon which was indorsed levied 
upon eight Negroes of which the two in question were a part" - the jury found 
for the plf but a new trial was ordered

We, William Huggins, Richard Reynolds and Emanuel Jarman owe Joseph Loftin 
$200  15 Oct. 1828
