Not Guilty, but Had Eloped

Kinston Special, 11th, to Industrial News - The jury this morning in the case
of State vs. Sidney Grimes, and others for gambling, returned a verdict of not
guilty, and when the defendants were called into court, it was found that
Sidney had taken leave. His conscience evidently anticipated that the jury
would return a verdict of guilty, and he is not to be found, to be informed of
his acquittal.

This case recalls to many a case several years ago in which a white man was
being tried for stealing a sheep. The jury, after being out some time brought
in a verdict of not guilty. Investigation revealed the fact that the accused
had ran away. His honor turned to the jury and remarked, dryly: "Gentlemen of
the jury, the defendant evidently knows more about who stole the sheep than
you do."

The defendant was captured in a swamp, where he had taken refuge, and informed
of his innocence.
