WATERS/HAZZARD BIBLE

A copy of this Bible is at Heritage Place; however, the original Bible pages have been
taped in enough places to make this Bible almost unreadable from a copy. The Bible is
now in the possession of Betty L. Brown who said the family data page is in four parts.
The tape has left an ugly dark strip on the edge of each torn part, but the pages are now
placed correctly in a sleeve and the entries are a little more understandable but not
fully readable. This was a case where the original Bible was in such disrepair it was
necessary to consult other sources to assist in deciphering the entries. Betty's notes are
found at the bottom.

Betty says that Elizabeth "Bettie" Waters married Samuel Hazzard in Lenoir Co. on 3 November
1880. Samuel's former wife, Harriett White had died on 30 Sept. 1880. Someone from the James
Hazzard family probably recorded their family data, and it may have been Nannie Byrd Hazzard,
wife of James. This explains how the Hazzard family came into possession of the Waters family
Bible. Samuel and "Bettie" had no known children, and her whereabouts after 1900 are unknown.
Apparently the father of Slade was Joseph, and I suspect his wife's name may have been the
Eliza, who died in 1833.

NOTES by Betty L. Brown:
The census for 1850-1880 now makes sense when compared to Bible records.
I used an age comparison work sheet, from the NCGSJ of Aug. 1994 for
identifying those people I want to know more about. In 1850 - Lenoir
Co., household #414 Slade Waters is found; aged 44, with Mary J; aged 30
and Franklin Brown; aged 13. In 1860 this family is in Woodington
Twsp., household #78. Slade is 45; Mason B. Warters is 35; William H
Wells is 10, and Mason E. is 7. In 1870 the family is in Pink Hill
Twsp, household #53. Slade is 64; Mason B. is 45, and Masie E. is 19.
In 1880 they are still in Pink Hill Twsp, household #86. Slade is 74,
Mason, wife, age 70 and Mason E., dau., age 26.
In 1900 in Trent Twsp., family #10, I find Masy Warters, aged 82, born
May 1818; and dau. Bettie Hazzard; aged 49, born Aug., 1850, both
widows. Masy mother of 1 child, 1 living. Bettie Hazzard mother of 0
children. Both state they could not read or write, were renting a
home. Wonder who recorded the Bible records, was it Slade?
I believe the Bible records probably tell me that Slade & Susan ? had
daughters, Nancy, Mary Jain and Rachel, who had md. a Wells. There may
have been others. I'll need to read 1840 census records also & 1830.
Note William H. Wells in 1860 census records. Since Susan is not listed
in 1850 census, presume she died before Nov. 28th 1850, when Bible
records marriage of Slade & Mason B. Time did not permit my looking at
marriage records for Lenoir Co. The marriage for Rachel to a Wells may
be recorded also.

Mason Elizabeth born [per Bible] on August 21st, 1853 is Bettie Waters
Hazzard, who md. Samuel Hazzard, and Mason B. was her mother. It was
hard to read her name in 1900 census record, but after using magnifying
glass I'm sure it was Masy, not Nancy.
