"West Halifax
The Late Milton Powers

Milton Powers, who died at Halifax Jan. 14, was the youngest son of Jonathan and
Elizabeth Powers. He was born in Orange, Vt., Feb. 18, 1831. His mother died when
he was two years and a half old. He was brought up by his grandfather and a maiden
aunt who lived in Pittsfield, Vt., until he was 10 or 12 years old. He then started
in the world for himself. He first found employment in a meat market in Pittsfield,
Mass., where he worked several years. He then worked for L.P. Mowry in the meat
business at Williamstown, Mass., for six years andahalf, when he enlisted
asaprivate in the 11th regiment, United States infantry regulars, and soon rose to
the rank of orderly sergeant. He was orderly sergeant three years. After that he
was clerk for the sutler one year. In 1864 he married Ellen D. Mowry, daughter of
his former employer at Williamstown, Mass. In 1866 they moved to Whitingham and 17
years ago moved to this town. He was one of the charter members of Charles P. Clark
Post, G.A.R., of which organization he was an active member. He was always active
in politics and town business, a man of pronounced opinions, a man who had the
courage to express and defend his convictions. He was one whose counsels will be
greatly missed. He was an active member of the Methodist church and society.

He leaves a widow and two children, Mattie A., wife of Orval Crosier of
Rutland, Vt., and Avery K., of this town; also three brothers, Edwin of Oregon,
William of South Dakota, Daniel [sic. David] of Pittsfield, Mass., and one sister,
Adelaide of Rutland."
