Seventy Five Acres on Puppy Creek
Written: July 31, 1883

Recorded on October 12, 1888, Patrick County Deed Book 23, Page 99 

  This Deed made this 31st day of July in the year of 1883 between James Cox and 
Jane his wife grantors and John W. Bryant grantee.  Witnesseth that in 
consideration of a comfortable maintenance during the lifetime of the grantors 
James Cox and Jane Cox the wife of the said James Cox, with food and lodging, 
etc. and the said John W. Bryant doth agree and bound himself to furnish to the 
said grantors a comfortable maintenance so long as they shall live, the receipt 
whereof is hereby acknowledged, the said James Cox and Jane his wife doth grant 
unto the said John W. Bryant, one certain tract or parcel of land with general 
warranty and peaceful possession, said land lying and being in the County of 
Patrick on Puppy Creek containing seventy five acres be the same more or less 
being the land the said James Cox now lives on, and bounded by the following 
lands to wit:  John Bryant and on the south west and on the North west, James P. 
Wright's and on the East by the Martin land, and on the South, Nash Wright, and 
the following personal property to wit: One gray horse, and one horned brindle 
cow, five head of sheep marked with an under kerl in the left ear and a crop off 
of the right ear, one red unmarked Bull yearling, all of my household property, 
and kitchen furniture.  
  Witness the following signatures and seals,

State of Virginia
                         County of Patrick to wit:

  I. E.B. Turner, a commissioner in chancery, in the County Court, in and for 
the County aforesaid, in the State of Virginia do certify that James Cox whose 
name is signed to the within writing, bearing date on the 31st day of July 1883, 
has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid and I do further 
certify that Jane Cox, the wife of the said James Cox whose name is likewise 
signed to the writing with in, bearing date as aforesaid, personally appeared 
before me in my County aforesaid, and being examined by one privately and a part 
from her husband and having the writing aforesaid fully explained to her, she 
the said James Cox acknowledged the said writing to be his act and declared that 
she had willing by executed the same and does not wish to retract it.  
Given under my hand this 31st day of July 1883:
                               E.B. Turner, Comm in Chancery

In the office of Patrick County Court on the 12 October, 1888, this deed was 
presented and with the certificate annexed, admitted to record.
