DEATH OF SPEAKER WOOTEN

Victim of Auto Accident Succumbs.

Interment at Kinston Sunday.

Raleigh, N.C., Mar. 1. - Hn. Emmett R. Wooten, speaker of the house of 
representatives, died at the Rex Hospial Saturday afternoon at 3:45, having 
succumbed to injuries sustained in an automobile accident on February 19, in 
which Wm. T. Aycock was instantly killed.

The remains were taken to Kinston and the funeral ceremonies were held there 
Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock.

Adjutant General Young and a military honorary guard of one sargeant and six 
guardsmen, accompanied the remains.  There was also special committees from the 
senate and house in the funeral party.  In addition to these speacial 
committees and the military guard many members of the legislature went to 
Kinston yesterday for the funeral.

With Mr. Wooten when he passed away were Mrs. Wooten and their children, Mrs. 
J. C. Wooten, his mother, Harry Wooten, his only surviving brother.

The late speaker of the house was a native of Craven county.  He was 36 years 
old, a son of J. C. and Mary Cobb Wooten.  He was educated at Wake Forest 
College and the University of North Carolina and had ably servd as a 
representative for the past four sessions of the general assembly.  He was 
elected speaker of the house at this present session by acclamation.

Governor Craig said of Mr. Wooten:  "It is a terrible tragedy and has deprived 
the State of one of its most brilliant and promising young men.  We all deeply 
sympathize with those who are bereaved so grievously and personally realize the 
loss of a dear friend."
