Last Johnny Reb of Greene Laid to Rest

Special in News Argus

Wilson, February 22 - A Confederate soldier was buried yesterday as the
last rites for H.H. Murphey, 96, one of the oldest survivors of the
Confederate Army in North Carolina, were held from the home of his son,
S.W. Murphey, in Stantonsburg.

last 18 months Murphey was next the last survivor of the Confederacy from

E.M. Barfield, former Wilson county man, is the lone survivor now in Greene
County.

Murphey joined the Confederate army at he beginning of the War between the
States and participated in the siege of Richmond.

He was buried yesterday in the family cemetery in Greene county. The Rev.
N.L. Nobles, of Winterville, conducted the services. Deceased is survived by
his son and one sister, Mrs. John Wooten, of Goldsboro.
