THOMAS WARREN MEWBORN

Kinston Free Press, 24 January 1938

RITES FOR T. W. MEWBORN HELD AT ST. MARY'S CHURCH

WELL KNOWN CITIZEN SUCCUMBED TO HEART ATTACK SATURDAY - FORMERLY
PROMIINENT IN BUSINESS HERE

Rites for Thomas W. Mewborn, 69, one of the best-known men in Kinston, were
held from St. Mary's Episcopal Church in mid-afternoon Sunday, the rector,
Rev. Dr. Bartholomew F. Huske, officiating.

Mr. Mewborn succumbed to a heart attack late Saturday. The attack was
blamed on exertion necessitated by the performance of some chore at his
home, on Blount Street, a short distance east of Queen.

For years he was a leading businessman here. He was a native of the
section, a son of the late Levi and Adelaide Albritton Mewborn. For a long
time, T. W. Mewborn & Co. conducted a large farm supply business. This, at
Queen and Blount, became a regular department store.

He dealt in live-stock and had other interests. He helped to promote a
number of enterprises.

He was public spirited. For years he was a staunch supporter of the
Chamber of Commerce. He was president of the Rotary club in its first
years. He was influential in local and district politics.

His wife died some time ago. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Otis G. Rucker,
and three grandchildren reared in his home, Mrs. Marvin Vick, Miss "Tommie"
Rucker and O. G. Rucker, Jr.

Thomas Mewborn, chairman of the Lenoir County Alcoholic Beverage Control
Board, who is known as Thomas Mewborn, Jr., Ronald E. Mewborn, Queen Street
businessman, and Miss Carlotta L. Mewborn connected with the public
schools, are among nephews and nieces.

In recent years, Mr. Mewborn was employed as a field representative of the
Hospital Saving Association of North Carolina.

Pallbearers were J. C. Rasberry, Walter Harding, Staten Sugg. W. Mitchell,
John G. Dawson, C. E. Raynor, T. W. Heath, and Ralph White.
