OBIT of JOEL LOFTIN - clipping, no notation of the paper or date. An
additional shorter OBIT written by J. M. W. stated that Joel died of
pleurisy. Original in the possession of George E. Loftin of Kinston, NC.

JOEL LOFTIN

Son of E. P. and S. C. Loftin, departed this life Feb. 28, 1893, aged 20
years, 8 months and 5 days. Joel Loftin was one of the best young men I
ever knew. He was timid and modest but always had the moral courage to
do his duty. He was devoted to his parents, and if he knew what they
wanted done he was sure to do it. Possessed with an abundance of Energy
and good judgement, he was so useful at home and on the farm that his
loving father, who is now entering old age, was relieved of much of the
care and anxiety about his business, and beginning to lean upon his dear
son, of whom it was very proud. The father and mother were almost heart-
broken at his death and so were all the family. They wept, and we all
wept for the sorrow was general. Everybody lamented his death. It was
one of those dispensation of Providence that baffles the skill of man.
But we do not mourn as those who have no hope. Joel, in addition to his
good morals and unsurpassed usefulness, was a Christian. He joined the
Church of Christ at Armenia, Jones County, last July, and since that
time has been at his post of duty. We will miss him in the church and
Sunday-school, for he was faithful and regular in both. The Lord has
seen fit to take him and he is too wise to make a mistake and too good
to do wrong. I pray that God will be merciful to the bereaved family and
that his grace will be sufficient for them.
