MAN SLAYS WIFE, SELF WITH RIFLE

Ed Lane Shoots Wife at LaGrange and Ends Own Life Later

Ed Lane, 45, WPA laborer of LaGrange shot and killed his wife Sarah Ward 
Lane, 42, at their home at 9 a.m. Wednesday and 15 minutes later ended 
his own life with a rifle bullet to the heart while being chased by 
police. Coroner Earley A Garner and Deputy Sheriff Wiley W. Jones 
investigated the matter and Coroner Gardner said an inquest would Be 
unnecessary. He talked to one eyewitness, Charles Fields, 67, and a 
women who heard the shooting, Mrs. Rayner. No cause could be advanced 
for Lane's act. The family has been aided by the Welfare Department for 
some Time. Their children were in school at the time. Lane used a .22 
calibre rifle And shot his wife twice. He bought the rifle, it was said 
Wednesday morning shortly before the shooting. One bullet was sufficent 
to end his life. He fell about 360(?) yards from the business district. 
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time. Survivors include a 
sister of Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Minnie Herring of Goldsboro and their five 
chil- dren, four of whom were in school when the tragedy occurred. The 
oldest, 14, was employed in Greene County. The youngest is six.

Arrangements for Rites in Murder Suicide to Be Made

Relatives Thursday afternoon were trying to complete funeral 
arrangements for Ed Lane, 45 who slew his wife, Sarah Ward Lane 42, and 
committed suicide at LaGrange early Wednesday. The Destitute couple 
leave five young Children and other relatives.

Mrs Ward is survived by a Sister Mrs. Minnie Herring of Goldsboro, and a 
brother, A. C. Ward, Port Royal, SC.

Mr. Lane WPA laborer and trick marksman with a rifle,was a native of 
Chesterfield, Va. He had not heard from his brothers and sisters in the 
past 10 years.

The children, two sons and three daughters  range in age from six to 14 
years. They have been aided by the Welfare Department for some time.
