MR. ROLAND HODGES DIES AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS.
ONE OF LENOIR'S MOST PROMINENT FARMERS AND PROBABLY WEALTHIEST MAN
GRIPPE-PNEUMONIA CAUSE OF HIS DEATH

Well-Known In Public Life Though Unostentatious-Leaves Estate Valued Quarter
Million-Funeral Today at Noon and Interment in Maplewood Cemetery, This City-
Large Family Connection

Mr. Roland Hodges died yesterday morning between 12 and 1 o'clock at his
home four miles from La Grange after an illness of ten days of grippe-
pneumonia. Though quite ill, hope was entertained for his recovery until
Friday afternoon, when a turn for the worse alarmed his family, and a hasty
summons was sent to this city for Dr. Jas. M. Parrott, who, accompanied by a
trained nurse, left in an automobile for Mr. Hodges' bedside. He continued to
grow worse however, and passed away after the mid-night hour.
Mr. Hodges was one of Lenoir's first citizens, and probably the wealthiest,
leaving an estate that is estimated at upwards of a quarter of a million
dollars. He was a large landowner and a heavy stockholder in many of the
financial and industrial enterprises of this section. Though possessed of a
large amount of worldly goods, the incumbent responsibility sat easily upon
him and he was one of the least ostentatious of men Kindhearted and
charitable, many objects of his benevolence stand living monument to him.
Though unobtrusive in public affairs he was always responsive to his
county' call, and served a term as sheriff of the county, by appointment, at
considerable sacrifice to his private interest. He was twice married, the
first time to Miss _________ Hardy. No children survive this union. He later
married Miss Julia Daly, only daughter of the late Mr. John Daly, and she and
five children survive his death. The children are Misses Claire, Bessie and
Hattie and John D. and Roland Jr. The three daughters were attending Atlantic
Christian College when advised of their father's critical illness and reached
home just before his death. He was 50 years of age.
Among the other relatives are Messrs. George L. and P. A. Hodges of this
city and Robert Hodges, of Falling Creek, Dr. J. M.; Hodges of La Grange and
Mrs. Hugh Bryan of the county, brothers and sisters.
The remains will be brought here for interment in Maplewood Cemetery and
the funeral will take place at one o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. W. Howard.
