 Mrs. Scandrett Died In Miami

After A Short Illness

Funeral Services for Former Beloved Adel Resident Held Here Sunday

[Lula Carlton Montfort born 30 Aug 1860 Butler, Taylor, Georgia, death 29 June
1940 Miami, Dade, Florida, burial 30 Jun 1940 Adel, Cook, Georgia]

Mrs. Lula Montfort Scandrett, former beloved Adel resident, died in Miami,
Florida, Saturday morning after an illness of less than a week, Mrs. Scandrett
suffered an attack on Monday. She has been will and active until the attack
which caused her death. The deceased was Miss Lula Montfort, member of a
prominent Butler, Georgia, family and after her marriage to the late Mr. William
Scandrett moved to Macon with him where they resided a number of years, later
moving to Cordele. Mr. Scandrett was one of the contractors in the construction
of the Georgia Southern Railroad, now a part of the Southern Railway. They
later moved to Cordele and came from that city to Adel in 1904 and Mrs.
Scandrett remained here until 19??. Mr. Scandrett died in 1912 and was buried
here. In 19?? Mrs. Scandrett returned to Cordele and a few years ago moved to
Miami where some of her children reside.

Mrs. Scandrett was a lady of refined nature and was loved by a host of friends
and held in high esteem by those who knew her only slightly. She was of a
friendly disposition and left her impress upon all who came in contact with her.
She was ever ready to help those in need and the sick and afflicted and gave
generously to the church and to other worthy institutions and persons.
Throughout her life she exemplified in a gracious manner the religion which she
professed and quietly and unostentatiously lived and when the summons came she
quietly fell asleep to awake in the better world. Mrs. Scandrett was eighty
years of age. At the age of one year she was baptized and through seventy-nine
years she considered she had been a member of the church, although she was not
received into full connection until she was a young girl.

The body was brought to Adel Sunday at noon by train accompanied by her
daughters, Miss Marie Scandrett of Miami and Miss Jeannette Scandrett of
Savannah, her son, Mr. R. M. Scandrett and her grandson, Robert Scandrett,
having arrived earlier in the morning by Automobile.

The remains were carried to the Wiseman Funeral Home where services were held at
five o'clock, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. E. Parker, of the Adel
Methodist church, who read appropriate and comforting passages of Scriptures and
offered a tender prayer for the bereaved ones. The minister, although he had
not known Mrs. Scandrett personally said that so many people had told him of her
fine character and her devotion to the higher and better things that he was sure
a great soul had simply passed from this life to the fuller life in the heavenly
realm. He spoke of the greatness of the life of the true Christian and what a
heritage it is to one's family and friends and of its abiding character and said
that Mrs. Scandrett had just gone ahead of her children and would be waiting for
them in the better world. The tribute to this good woman was a beautiful one.
A quartett including Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Booth, Miss Birdie VanBrackle and Mr. J.
M. Sutton, with Mrs. Hugh D. Wright pianist, sang Abide With Me. Rev. Parker
read the church ritual and pronounced the benediction at the grave and Mrs.
Scandrett was laid to rest beside her greatly esteemed husband who was a
prominent citizen here and who served the city as councilman and was a civic
leader during his residence here.

Pall-bearers were F. R. Booth, J.M. Sutton, W. D. Parrish, E. M. Rogers, P. M.
Parrish, W. T. Shytle, all of whom have been close friends of the family many
years.

Surviving Mrs. Scandrett are one son, Mr. Richard M. Scandrett, of Miami and two
daughters, Miss Marie Scandrett of Miami and Miss Jeannett Scandrett of
Savannah, three grandchildren, Mrs. K. C. Worthington and Robert L. Scandrett,
Miami and Lieut. William Scandrett, Ft. Monmouth, N. J., and two great grand
children, Richard and Mary Helen Worthington of Miami. She is also survived by
one sister, Mrs. Ella Eldridge of New York City and other relatives.

A number of friends from Savannah, Cordele, Valdosta and other cities were here
for the funeral services.

The tender sympathy of a host of friends goes out to the sorrowing ones.
