                          Rites are Held
     Valdosta, Ga., July 13-- Funeral services for William Alexander Burdette, 
85, who died Monday at a Valdosta hospital after a long illness, were held 
Wednesday at the residence, with the Rev. Dr. R. Davis Mohler and the Rev. 
Cecil Thompson Officiating. Internment was in the Worthington- Burdette 
mausoleum in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Burdette attended Mercer University when it 
was located at Old Penfield. His Parents, the late Mr.& Mrs. Thomas P. 
Burdette, of Moreland county, Virginia. were among the early settlers of 
Washington.
     A "gentleman of the old school", he was addressed during his childhood 
as "Manse Willie". During his 50 years residence in Valdosta, Burdette was 
active in both city and county development, in addition to commercial and 
agricultural affairs.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs Ethel Burdette Worthington, of 
Washington D.C.; four sons, I.A. Burdette, of Valdosta; C. W. and J. L. 
Burdette, both of Jackson, Miss., and A.D. Burdette, of Meridian, Miss.; two 
brothers, J. Luke Burdette, of Washington, Ga., who now  resides on the 
original Burdette Plantation of antebellum days, on which Eli Whitney 
perfected and operated the first cotton gin, and Dr. Joe Burdette of 
Sandersville, Ga. and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
