Atkinson County Citizen - February 19, 2015
  Mr. Henry Grady Carter, 68, of Pearson, GA, passed away Sunday, February 8, 
2015, at Tift Region Medical Center in Tifton, GA. following a brief illness.
 Mr. Carter was born April 5, 1946, in Pearson, GA. to Milton and Ferrell McNeal 
Carter. He was a 1964 graduate of Atkinson County High School where he was an 
outstanding drummer in the percussion section. He worked for twenty eight years 
at Satilla Memorial Hospital (now Mayo Health System) in Waycross, GA in the 
surgical ward, risk management and corporate compliance offices. For the past 
nine years, he was employed by the Atkinson County Board of Education at the 
Middle School as a seventh grade science teacher. His hobbies included wood 
carving and carpentry. He served as a medic in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam 
era. His church membership was at Elbethel Church in Pearson, GA. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Thigpen Carter; a sister, Eunice Carter; 
brothers, Everette, Freddie and H. M. Carter.
 Survivors include,  daughter, Amber Carter Johnson and husband Steven of 
Pearson; brother, Eddie Carter and wife, Libby of Patterson, GA; five sisters, 
Maxine Baskin of Columbus, GA, Estelle Davis and husband Charlie of 
Jacksonville, FL, Catherine Tanner and husband Buddy of Pearson, Juanita Steese 
and husband Larry of Ormand Beach, FL, Geraldine Spradley and husband Benny of 
Middleburg, FL; four grandchildren, Ava Johnson, Stella Jo Johnson, Sara 
Johnson, and Ali Johnson; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also 
survive.
 Funeral services for Mr. Carter were held Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at 3:30 
p.m. at Elbethel Church with Mrs. Catherine Tanner, Rev. Donnie Wilkes and Rev. 
Edward Mathews officiating. Special musical selections How Great Thou Art and 
Amazing Grace were rendered by the attending congregation with Rev. Donnie 
Wilkes leading and  Michelle Howell accompanying at the piano. Soft music for 
the prelude and the postlude was played by Michelle Howell pianist.
 The interment followed in the Sweetwater Cemetery.
Serving was active pallbearers were Shea Browning, Kelly Dixon, Stephen 
Spradley, Wayne Marx, Roger Baskin, Mike Murray and Ray Peterson.
 Honorary pallbearers were Middle School Teacher and Principal Anthony Davis.
 Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, GA was in charge of the arrangements.
