All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carla Miles http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00010.html#0002476 January 6, 2005, 11:03 pm The Marion County Patriot, August 16, 1901 The Marion County Patriot, No. 32 August 16, 1901 Page One Dr. Fussell Murdered Irwin County the Scene of a Cold-blooded Homicide Fitzgerald, Ga., Aug. 14 One of the most cold blooded murders in the history of Irwin County took place about 10 miles east of Fitzgerald, in which Dr. Wiley Fussell, one of the best known men in the county, was shot and killed by a white man by the name of Brantly, who met him in the public road and told him that he was there to kill him, and immediately put a double-barrel shotgun to his shoulder and blazed away, the shot taking effect in the doctor's head. He died instantly. After the killing Brantly got in his buggy and drove off, and is supposed to be hiding in the big cypress swamps on the Omulgee river. It is reported the trouble is of two years standing, when it is said Dr. Fussell won the wife of Brantley's brother. More trouble is looked for, as Fussell is well connected.
