The Ocilla Star 25 May 1922 FP
         J. K. Barrs Kills Himself With Pistol Early Monday Morning
Brooding Over Death Of Wife Only Cause That Can Be Assigned
Mr. J. K. Barrs, who for the last year or two has run a restaurant on Cherry
Street, committed suicide about 5:30 Monday morning by shooting himself through
the head with a pistol.
Mr. Barrs was a widower, aged 63 years, and since the death of his wife
several years ago, has brooded over her death and had at times remarked that he
would be better off dead.
On the morning of his death, he left the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. E.
Roberts with whom he made his home, earlier than usual and had gone down town.
He went back to the house and entered his room. A minute or two after he had
gone into his room his daughter and Mr. Roberts heard a shot and upon
investigation found him lying across the bed with a hole in his temple. He died
in a minute or two without recovering consciousness.
No cause can be assigned for his rash deed other than brooding over the death
of his wife; but that he had considered this step seems evident from a
statement that he made to Mr. Tom Lake on Sunday that that night would be his
last in Ocilla. Mr. Like supposing he intended to go away, thought nothing of
his remark.
Mr. Barrs moved his family to Irwin County about sixteen years ago from
Cochran, and had been a respected citizen since he came. He is survived by four
daughters, Mes-dames J. W. Roberts, R. E. Roberts, J. H. Roberts, Lott Grantham
and four sons, Grover, McCoy, Cleo, of Ocilla and J. H. Barrs of Blakely.
He was buried Tuesday at Mount Olive Cemetery, Rev. W. E. Arnold conducting
the services.
