Owen Segraves

 The funeral service for Owen Segraves of Fitzgerald, who died Thursday, 
September 5, 1996 at Dorminy Medical Center, was held Saturday, 
September 7 at Central United Methodist Church. He was 85.
 Dr. Edwin "Buddy" Cooper and Dr. Gene Wilder officiated
at the 2:00 p.m. service with interment in Evergreen
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wyndall Walters, Cleon Tankersley,
Wesley Walters, John Hudson,Gene Mason and Marion Mason.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Carlisle Sunday
School Class,Rotory Club,Bethany Sunday School Class,
and directors of Community Bank.
 The deceased was born January 16, 1911 at Orchard
Hill, GA to.Ernest 0. and Maude Allen Segraves. Former
owner and founder of Allen's Super Market in Fitzgerald and member of 
Central United Methodist Church, he was a
WWII veteran, European Theater, U. S. Army and had
lived in the community most of his life. He was a Sunday School 
Superintendent for over 20 years and also served on the Board of 
Stewards and Administrative Board for many years. He was a board member 
Emeritus of Ben Hill-Irwin Tech Foundation and co-founder of The First 
State Bank of Fitzgerald and currently director
Emeritus of Community Bank.He was named Citizen of the
Year in 1982 and he was a Patron of the Fitzgerald Arts
Council. Mr. Segraves was the oldest living member of the Rotary Club, 
recently being recognized as a member for more than 50 years. He was 
also the only person to serve twice as president and help found Rotary
Clubs in Ocilla, Douglas, and Ashburn. He was recognized as a Will Watt 
Fellow and a Paul Harris Fellow and a recipient of the Service Above 
Self Award.
He was a Host Family for Foreign Exchange Students for
the Rotary Student Program.
 He is survived by wife, Elyse G. Segraves of Fitzgerald; one sister: 
Ernestine Mason of Warner Robins; one stepdaughter: Merian M. Hammond
of Miami, FL; 3 nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by first 
wife, Frances Tankersley Segraves and one brother, Marion Segraves.
Paulk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
