William Taylor Harris
William Taylor Harris of Washington, DC died Thursday, January 22, 1998.
Mr. Harris was the son of Will C. and Lillie Jay Harris. He graduated 
Saluatorian of his senior class at Ocilla High School. He was a teacher for 
seven years of agriculture and an extension supervisor, was a Foreign Service 
Extension Advisor for 19 years, and his position took him to Asia and Africa, 
where he educated many countries on land cultivation. In returned to 
Washington, D.C. in 1970 and worked with the State Department until his 
retirement.
Mr. Harris was a member of Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church were he served as 
treasurer of the Brotherhood; was a member of the usher board and both the 
kitchen and property committees.
Mr. Harris also served as the president of the Louis Jay Johnson Memorial 
Scholarship Foundation for many years;. was president of the NAACP in 
Sylvester; a member of the Savannah State University Alumni Association, 
District of Columbia Chapter and director of the Boys Club in Sylvester and 
Quitman.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Cooper Harris of Washington, D.C.; one 
daughter, Vonnie Harris of Queens, NY; one brother, Alfred C. Harris of East 
Elmhurst, NY; one sister, Lillie Ruth Lampkin of Waycross; one aunt, Ella 
George of Ocilla; one granddaughter; two great grandchildren .and several 
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at 10 a.m. at Pennsylvania 
Avenue Baptist Church
in Washington; D.C. with Reverend Charles Clyde Worthy officiating.
	Sandra Norris and Lorretta Jones were the soloists.
Pallbearer's were Charles Hansborough, Harold Grier, Levi Baisden, Fred Davis, 
Michael Brown
, and Ellis Norris, Honorary pallbearers were the Men of the P ABC Brotherhood, 
Wendell Thompson, Harold Aldridge, William Fitzgerald, Harold Dance, Samuel 
Moton, Jesse Williams, Harold Abbott and Louis Neal. 
Interment was in Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
Stewart Funeral Home in Washington, DC was in charge of the arrangements.
