                IN MEMORIAM
   House Creek, Ga. Oct. 1888
It is with sadness we write of the death of John A. Handley, Sr., of Wilcox
County, which occurred on the 14th of September. He died suddenly of
neuralgia of the heart. His wife did not hear him complain of anything much
before he fell from his chair dead. He was about sixty-five years old, born
in 1823, and married Lucretia Mixon, daughter of E. B. Mixon. 1842, and raised
a family of ten children.
He was a volunteer and member of Company E., 49th Geaorgia Regiment, and
was always at his post for duty until he was captured and taken prisoner at
the Battle of the Wilderness. He was than held a prisoner and kept at Fort
Delaware until the war ended. He reached home in July, 1865. He then began
farming, which he made a success and accumulated some little property. He was
elected one of the county commissioners of Wilcox County in 1878 and served
eight years in succession and his worth to the county, while a commissioner,
will never be over estimated by the citizens. He was a good financier and was
not ashamed nor afraid to speak in the interest of the county.
