TIFTON - The Rev. John S. Gibbs Sr., 76, of Tifton, died Monday, Jan. 15, 
2007, at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church 
of Ty Ty. The Rev. Danny Jones and the Rev. Larry Layfield will officiate 
and the Rev. John S. Gibbs Jr. will provide the eulogy. Burial will follow 
at Oakridge Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight in the chapel of Bowen-
Donaldson Home for funerals.

Ronald Dorman, Clinton Moore and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Buddy 
Gentry, Tommy Land Sr., Ed Cleghorn, the Rev. Danny Ray, Bobby Miles, Fincher 
Matthews, George Mathews, John Lindsey, Edd Walker, the Rev. Eddie Allen, Guy 
Evans, Chuck Yzenski and Rex Johnson will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The Rev. Gibbs was born on June 13, 1930, in Ty Ty. He was the son of Carl 
Gibbs and Lucy Sikes Gibbs, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by a 
daughter, Meg Gibbs. He was retired after serving as the minister of Calvary 
Baptist Church for 33 years. He was a former member of Kiwanis Club of Tifton 
and founder of Brother Charlie?s Rescue Center, where he served as director 
for 14 years. In his retirement, he pastored several churches in South Georgia 
and for the last four years, had been pastor of Arp Baptist Church in Irwin 
County.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bennett Gibbs of Tifton; two sons and 
daughters-in-law, the Rev. John S. Gibbs Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Ocilla, 
and David Gibbs and his wife, Kristy, of Tifton; five grandchildren, John S. 
"Evan" Gibbs III, Megan Gibbs, Bennett Gibbs, Blair French and Lane French.
