Barber, Sophie T. ROTTERDAM Sophie T. Barber, 86, of Claremont Ave., died suddenly at home Wednesday, September 22, 2004. Mrs. Barber was born in Catskill and resided most of her life in the Schenectady area. She was a World War II Navy Wave before working at the Army Depot and the Watervliet Arsenal, where she retired with over 30 years service, as procurement clerk. Sophie had a lifelong love of people of all ages, as was evident with her volunteerism in the Schenectady community. She had many interests and was involved in many organizations, especially those with advocacy for senior citizens. Sophie was past president of the Highbridge Civic Association, past officer for the National Association of Federal Employees, past president of AARP 490, board member of the Annie Schaffer Senior Citizens Center, Human Service Planning Council, New York State Senior Action Council, active with the Rotterdam Seniors where she was the trip director, past president of Catholic Daughters Court St. Catherine, No. 128 and the Christ Child Society, she was a charter member of the Women's Memorial Foundation and among being honored many times through the years, she also received the Schenectady County Office of the Aging Senior Citizen of the Year. Sophie was a long time communicant of St. Madeline Sophie Church where she was also a volunteer and a member of the choir. Sophie also enjoyed golf, bowling, playing cards, crocheting and being with people. She married Anthony J. Barber in 1948, he died in 1980. She was also predeceased by her sister, Frances Ganson. She is survived by relatives, friends and neighbors. Funeral service Monday morning 9:00 from the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady and 10:00 at St. Madeline Sophie Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours Sunday afternoon 2 to 6 at the funeral home. Interment, St. Patrick's Cemetery, Catskill.
