Reed Martin was born on October 10, 1837, the first son of Moses Josephas
Martin, Jr. and Sarah Sally Moles from the Smith River community in Dodson,
Virginia.
His early life was much like that of any young man growing up in rural Dodson
as he worked on the family farm.
On March 13, 1856, he married Mahala Bryant, the daughter of Abner Johnson
Bryant and Sarah Sally Bridges who also lived in the community. Their
marriage was short as she passed away just over a year later on May 19, 1857.
She was laid to rest in the Bryant Cemetery which lies on a hill just behind
where the old Heidelbach School sat.
In the 1860 census, he was working on the farm of John Tuggle, Jr. and Mary
Tuggle.
On January 17, 1861, he married Louisa A. Foster of the Elamsville community,
the daughter of George Jackson Foster and Nancy Elizabeth Martin. It should be
noted that she was also his second cousin.
Just over a year later, he joined the Confederate States of America on March
22, 1862 in Patrick County and joined Company D of the 12th Virginia Regiment.
His service came to an abrupt end on July 12, 1862 when he succumbed to
typhoid fever. He was evidently buried in the Fallen Creek area of Petersburg,
Virginia but there is a memorial to him in the Moses Martin Cemetery which is
located deep in the woods in Dodson, Virginia about a mile or so off Heidelbach
School Road near his childhood home.
